Let them eat cake.
- Marie Antoinette (on the eve of the French Revolution, it is believed that she uttered the insensitive remark upon hearing peasants' complaints that there wasn't enough bread to go around)
I'm not sure how it happened, but somewhere along the line I became a beta tester. I have been on the forefront of many programs and websites and on those rare opportunities, when given the chance to mark my territory, I am user Orlando. Examples include Orlando on Pownce and OpenID. I like working through the muck and being a part of creating unique experiences.
I was a beta tester of Newsvine and by far this has been my best experience on the net. Not because Newsvine is the end all site, but because of the community I found here. I have met some truly wonderful and fascinating people. Newsvine has introduced me to Movie makers, writers, reporters, artists, photographers, and all sorts of programers. I have learned about the things I eat, the places I have lived, and the insightfulness of street performers. I have even hobnobbed with one of the founding members of Newsvine.
Despite all this, Newsvine is not the boss of me. I have a profession and understand the business model that makes Newsvine profitable. For me, Newsvine has always been a business with a community wrapped around it; that is until the buyout by MSNBC started to peel away the Social aspect of the site, We users were the product. We produced the content that made Newsvine marketable, we made Newsvine, not the other way around. Does anyone know how many RAV winners have already left the Vine? Does anyone care? These people represent the shining stars on our happy little site, these people have been identified by the Newsvine staff as the cream of the crop. Once the cream is gone what's left?
Without users that generate original content, Newsvine becomes nothing more than another News site on the web. Is that the way that Newsvine wants to go? Just take a trip down the old way back machine website and you can see the caucuses of prior sites that have chosen that path. I hope Newsvine realizes that it must protect its talent before it's too late. Content producers are the catalyst that drive Newsvine and make Newsvine a very special place. If they want to keep us around, I would suggest they try to generally keep us happy or the exodus of talent will continue.
Newsvine, you had something very special here, please don't let a few bad apples spoil it for everyone. Engage us or we might just go elsewhere. So here we are; are we breaking up Newsvine?
